Heat Treating Aluminum

This process allows for the pipe to be bent easily and not result in folding or cracking. If the aluminum is compressed in a vice without prior softening of some sort, the metal will crack and potential holes may form.

Coat the pipe with a thin layer of bar soap as a temperature indicator and apply the lit torch along the length of the pipe. Any fuel type works fine.

The soap will begin to brown, as shown above. Once the soap is a dark brown color, the aluminum has reached the necessary temperature. Allow the pipe to cool.
