PHYS310 S17 W7

Monday Back to PHYS 310 Main Website

Before Class

  • See video about Electricity Finances and read Finances Slides
  • Please read that the Senate vote prioritized the environment.
  • The EPA was set up by Nixon in 1970. It was way way necessary. Its success is reflected in the greatly improved health of our environment and our people. Because of this success, do people care about the environment less? Please read this story on NPR.
  • See video about Carbon Abatement and see supporting Carbon Abatement slides
  • Read the updated McKinsey’s Carbon Abatement Curve or at least look at the graphs.
  • Consider your projects. What do you want to do? What needs to get done one the website by Saturday Night’s evaluation?
  • At 8:45 AM Sunday, I’m grading question #2 of your midterm. I have posted an expanded version of the midterm with comments about how you’re doing on the main class webpage. I have expanded it by added some of the questions I figured you wouldn’t have time for during the exam. Please do these problems completely. I will continue to add comments as I grade through the rest of the questions, so I will update this document in the next hours.

Wednesday’s Class

Before Class
!!! I just received the following from Chris:

  1. Energy profit/consumption decoupling: https://www.c2es.org/us-states-regions/policy-maps/decoupling/detail (this is as good a description as any, but googling “energy decoupling California” will give you a lot more)
  2. It would be good for students to have a sense of legislative direction re: RPS:http://www.cpuc.ca.gov/RPS_Homepage/. I encourage students to use the google machine to figure out how RPS is attached to the state’s climate goal (as codified in AB32 and SB32) and how related legislation helps (e.g., SB350) (related: should energy efficiency be counted as an energy resource?).
  3. Demand response is a bit outside what I do, but my colleagues say this is a good start:https://www.caiso.com/1893/1893e350393b0.html

From a local government perspective… the students can take a look at the County’s climate action plan (read the energy section only) so we can discuss what local governments can and can’t do (and do and don’t do well). http://www.slocounty.ca.gov/planning/CAP Please read the executive summary.

During Class

  • Chris Read from the County’s Climate Action Plan and Community Choice Energy Team comes to talk to class. Is there a future for you in this field?

After Class

Friday:

Before Class

During Class

  • Efficiency
  • Projects

After Class

  • Before Midnight, Saturday, please update your Project website. I will be looking for a well developed description of the challenge and proposed solution. Please describe the technologies involved and any related sociological, economic, or environmental concerns, opportunities, or consequences.
  • Finish and log your second self intervention: Empathy Self-Intervention. Recognize when you’ve “otherized” someone – established them as “the other” and see how this gives you the ability to dismiss the validity of their perspective. Then endeavor to “walk a mile in their shoes”, see their behavior as something that you do, see the world through their eyes. Recognize how they are the same as you, or where you have similarities.
