Week 2 SUSTAIN Spring 2015

Day 1: Monday

Before Monday’s Class:
1. Watch this short video from MIT (Walter Lewin was a graduate student when I was there in 1984) What are waves?
2. Watch these three short videos I made regarding traveling waves: I just fixed the broken link to the first video at 9 PM Sunday Night – sorry for the inconvenience. Introducing the Traveling Waveform, Dynamics of the wave, Example of a Traveling Wave
3. Read and understand all of 16.9 and master the example
4. Finish the problem set and/or come in with questions.
5. PHYS-132 people and others who would like to see the mathematical form of the damped oscillator, please see: The damped oscillator

If you want a review of frequency, wavelength, and speed, check out: http://www.aplusphysics.com/courses/honors/waves/wave_equation.html

In Class: Playing with Springs and Strings. What creates a reflection? What about open and closed boundaries?

After Class:

Day 2: Tuesday 180-262, not in the SUSTAIN room
Please read section 16.11 and 17.1 – 17.3 in your textbook. Know about geometry and intensity, power and learn the decibel scale.
You may want a review of frequency, wavelength, and speed, check out: http://www.aplusphysics.com/courses/honors/waves/wave_equation.html
It might not be a bad idea to review the scaling video if you like.

MT#1 from 2012 posted on Main Webpage
In Class: BIG EXAM #1 today! And then,
Power, Dimensions – Again, please read 16.11 in your textbook.

Day 3: Wednesday: 180-269

Before lab: Study EM waves, and Thermal. This is a video that I originally made for the energy class I teach. However, we will be studying every element of this video in this unit and in thermal physics later in the quarter. So, please see and embrace every element of this video now.
Heat Flow
Also please know Table 24.1 and Figure 24.9 in section 24.3 of your textbook.

During Lab: Let’s talk about the energy and power in a wave. Lab #2 is posted on the main webpage – please have a look.

PS#2 is Posted on the Main Page as well as the first midterm from 2012, also posted Big Exam #1 Solutions.

Day 4: Thursday Meet in 180-262, not in the SUSTAIN room

Before Class:
Read 17.4 in your textbook.
See video on Doppler Effect

In Class: Doppler Effect

FRIDAY (if you’re interested) Lonny talks from 11-12 on the 2nd floor of the library about Appropriate Technology and community intervention. He’s a good speaker. Check out Lonny on his TEDx talk
